Newborn Diaper Trial Results: Lil Joey

The tenth and final newborn diaper that I have to report on for the newborn diaper trial results is the Lil Joey by Rumparooz.  Rumparooz has some of my favorite prints (I'm a sucker for plaid) and I love their covers for night time both for my middle child and I purchased some of their newborn covers and loved them.  To add to that the Lil Joey newborn diapers have to be some of the squishiest and most adorable diapers that will just make your ovaries ache!

I conducted the newborn diaper trial exactly the same as my normal diaper trial with the exception of how I logged the leaks.  Overall I would say that the newborn diapers I used leaked more often than the one size diapers I have tried in the past.  For that reason I decided to track the severity of the leak to give the results a little more color.  With each leaks I ranked them from one to five with one representing a tiny leak that you might not even change their clothes for and a five being soaked.  Now for the results of the Lil Joey newborn diaper:
Number times of uses: 6
Number of leaks: 1
Longest wear without a leak: 2 hours
Average severity of leaks: 13
Big Booty factor – 2

Pros:
·      Small and squishy!
·      Absorbency is built into diaper for ease of use
·      Double inner gussets keep messes contained

  Cons:
·      Weren't absorbent enough past 2 weeks
·      Long dry time because of built in absorbency

Although these diaper are adorable they did not fit well past the one month mark and were not nearly absorbent enough.  These diaper are said to fit from 4-12 pound.  When we came home from the hospital my son was about 5.5 pounds and the fit was great for these so I would imagine that they really would fit as small as 4 pounds and possibly even go up to 12 pounds.  For the first two weeks these were my go to diaper because they fit so well and I didn't need much for absorbency but once we hit the two week mark it was clear that they would not cut it any longer.  I only recorded 6 uses but after the two week mark I actually had a lot more uses that I didn't record because he would leak in under an hour so I was just constantly changing him.  I would say that if you know you are going to have a small baby and want to invest in newborn diapers that will work for the first few weeks then these are the ones for you but for most people they are not worth the investment.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit is perfect in the legs and fits amazing below his umbilical cord.  I LOVE this print and I just think he looks so adorable in this diaper at this age and weight.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  The fit is still good but we were leak central by this point.

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  The fit is getting a little small at this point and we have long since quit using the diaper and I just kept it for picture reference only.

Overall these diapers are really cute and work amazing for the very tiny newborn stage from about 0-2 weeks but after that they just did not work for us.  I'm sure that if you added a booster that it would work better but that negated some of the benefits for me of the inner gussets and the easy of putting it on.

Newborn Diaper Trial Results: Thirsties Newborn All In One

Kicking off the final week of the newborn diaper trial results is the Thirsties All in One newborn diaper.  I have always been a fan of Thirsties covers and I even put the pocket diaper through the trial when it was first released so I was excited to try out the Thirsties All in One newborn diaper.

Now for the results of the Thirsties All in One newborn diaper:
Number times of uses: 9
Number of leaks: 5
Longest wear without a leak: 2.5 hours
Average severity of leaks: 3
Big Booty factor – 2

Pros:
·      Fits small babies
·      Attached soaker makes laundry easy and dries quickly
·      Has umbilical snap down to fit a newborn

  Cons:
·      Not very absorbent, least of the ones I tried
·      Fit is small so doesn't last very long

This diaper performed below average compared to the other newborn diaper that I tried.  I liked it for the first two weeks when my son wasn't peeing very much but after that it was leak central with most leaks being 3 or above.  I would even experience small leaks at the 1-2 hour mark and eventually I just quit using them since they would barely last (hence the low number of uses).  This was one of the first diapers that I put on my son because it's so cute and small and fit him great at birth but unfortunately didn't last long.  The first picture below is at 2 days old and about 5.5 pounds.  As you can sit it fits really well without a lot of bulk.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit on the legs is good at this age and still sits below the belly button with the snap down.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  By this time the fit was still good but our absorbency needs at this point surpassed what the diaper could do and I quit using it shortly after a month.

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  I kept the diaper for purposes of providing a picture of how it fits at the size but we had not used it for a while at this point.

Overall this diaper was good for the first few weeks but then it wasn't reliable enough for me to use.  I continued using it up until a month for the purposes of my diaper trial but I would not have continued using it for personal use outside of that.  I love that it fit small but its useful life for me was short.

Newborn Diaper Trial Results: BumGenius Newborn All In One

Finishing off week three of the newborn diaper trial results is the newborn BumGenius All in One newborn diaper.  This is probably the most commonly used newborn diaper since BumGenius is generally very popular in the market so of course I had to put it through the trial.

Now for the results of the BumGenius Newborn All in One:
Number times of uses: 10
Number of leaks: 5
Longest wear without a leak: 2 hours
Average severity of leaks: 2.5
Big Booty factor – 2

Pros:
·      All in one design with built in absorbency makes washing and putting away easy
·      Cheapest of the newborn diapers I tried
·      Hook and loop is convenient for newborns

  Cons:
·      Built in absorbency make dry time longer
·      Not as absorbent as other newborn diapers

While I generally like BumGenius products this was one of my least favorite newborn diapers to try.  The results show that it leaked about half of the time but the other 5 times I used it I knew that I couldn't keep it on too long or else it would leak and on average it leaked after less than 2 hours.  The microfiber is actually built into the diaper so it takes longer to dry but I do like that it has hook and loop which makes it easier to get a good fit.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit on the legs was a little loose. It comes close to his belly button so if your baby is longer you may be able to use it before the umbilical cord comes off but I wasn't able to.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  The legs fit well at this weight and age. As you can see the hook and loop is not even close to touching so I would be concerned that  on a chunkier baby it wouldn't fit at all.

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  I actually was not still using this diaper at 2 months because he had long outgrown the absorbency I just kept the diaper for the purpose of getting pictures. As you can see the rise is ok but the hook and loop is almost on the biggest setting.

Overall I was not a big fan of this diaper.  The fit was less than ideal and the absorbency was poor and difficult to add a booster too.  Also because the microfiber is built in, once it wears out the diaper will be virtually unusable.  It was one of the less expensive ones but I think for the money you can get a much better diaper to use.

Newborn Diaper Trial Results: Peachy Green All In One

Today I am sharing the results of the newborn diaper trial for one of my favorite trim diapers the size zero Peachy Green All in One.  These were some of the first newborn diapers I bought after I found out I was pregnant when I saw a rainbow of them on the buy/sell/trade page and decided I had to have them!  I already own a bunch of the one size AI2 and size 1 AIO diapers and I have long been a fan of how trim but absorbent they are.

Now for the results of the Peachy Green size zero:

Number times of uses: 17
Number of leaks: 6
Longest wear without a leak: 3.5 hours
Average severity of leaks: 1.5
Big Booty factor – 2

Pros:
·      Very trim!
·      Soaker detaches for ease of laundering and drying
·      Lots of great print options that are gender neutral

  Cons:
·      Sized diaper so no rise snaps or umbilical snap down
·      One the expensive end at almost $25 a diaper but I bought all of my used

My love of the trimness of Peachy Green continues.  These diapers are intended to fit from 7-16 pounds and that was about right.  As a true newborn diaper this did not fit as the legs had gaps but once he was in the advertised weight range it fit well.  I used these with a booster for a long time and was really happy with the absorbency for my heavy wetter.  The biggest con is that they are very expensive relative to other brands but because its not really a true newborn diaper but rather the first in a line up of sized diapers you get more use out of it than most newborn diapers.  There is also a lot available on the buy/sell/trade page for a good price which is how I acquired all of mine.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit on the legs was a little loose. You can see the rise is up over his belly button so it wouldn't work until the umbilical cord falls off. Also the tag is listed as "fishnoodles" which is an old brand name for the same diaper.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  The legs fit well at this weight. Also the tag is listed as "Fishnoodles" which is an old brand name for the same diaper.

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  The fit here is great as its just below his belly button and there is still plenty of room in the waist. I actually am still using my size zero peachy greens (as well as my size 1) on him at 3 months.

I am and will continue to love the trimness of Peachy Green diapers.  I loved these diapers on my little man since they were so adorable but still worked so well!

Newborn Diaper Trial Results: Tots Bots Teeny Fit

Kicking off week three of the newborn diaper trial results is the Tots Bots Teeny Fit All in One newborn diaper.  I had a lot of fun picking out these diapers because they have some of the cutest patterns and a lot of gender neutral options (we don't find out the gender before birth). I had also heard a lot of good things about the teeny fit diaper so I was excited to try it.

Now for the results of the Tots Bots Teeny Fit:

Number times of uses: 14
Number of leaks: 6
Longest wear without a leak: 3 hours
Average severity of leaks: 1.5
Big Booty factor – 2

Pros:
·      Tots Bots hook and loop is great and helps get a good fit for the waist
·      Attached soaker makes laundry easy and dries quickly
·      Lots of great print options that are gender neutral

  Cons:
·      Does not have an umbilical snap or rise snaps
·      The most expensive newborn diaper I purchased at $21.95 each

This diaper performed pretty consistent with the other newborn diapers that I tried out so overall it did pretty good.  I love how cute they are but since they don't have rise snaps they fit for a much smaller window.  The legs did not fit until around 7 pounds and even then the tabs were completely crossed over.  I couldn't use these on my son right away but I knew that they would be a solid diaper once they did start fitting and I would grab for these frequently.  They also have a pretty generous rise so they did fit for longer than some other newborn diapers.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit on the legs was a little loose. You can see the rise is up over his belly button so it wouldn't work until the umbilical cord falls off.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  The legs fit well at this weight and age and the tabs no longer cross over but do still meet (this print is Wimblebum and I LOVE it!).

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  The fit here is great as its just below his belly button and there is still plenty of room in the waist.  I love hook and loop for a newborn because it helps the fit so much.  I actually continued to use the teeny fits until about 2.5 months old when he finally outgrew the absorbency.

Overall the Tots Bots Teeny Fit were some of the cutest and squisheiest newborn diapers that I tried and they also were very absorbent.  I liked this diaper so much that I look forward to trying out an Easy Fit and putting it through the trial in the future!

Newborn Diaper Trial Results: Diaper Rite All In One

Finishing out the second week of newborn diaper trial results is the Diaper Rite All In One newborn diaper.  I have long been a fan of Diaper Junction and their products so I was excited to try out this newborn diaper.

With each leak I ranked them from one to five with one representing a tiny leak that you might not even change their clothes for and a five being soaked. Diaper Rite is unique in that it comes with two soakers and approximately 6 configurations. One soaker is longer and one shorter and you can snap either soaker in the front or back of the diaper and even use both at the same time by snapping one in the front and the other in the back.  Because of all of the options I logged results for using just one insert (the small one) as well as using both inserts. Here are the results of the Diaper Rite All In One newborn:

One Insert:
Number times of uses: 9
Number of leaks: 5
Longest wear without a leak: 2 hours, 45 minutes
Average severity of leaks: 2
Big Booty factor – 3

Two Inserts:
Number times of uses: 8
Number of leaks: 0
Longest wear without a leak: 2 hours, 45 minutes
Average severity of leaks: 0
Big Booty factor – 3

Pros:
·      Multiple options to customize absorbency
·      Fit longer than most of the other newborn diapers
·      Least expensive of the newborn diaper I tried

  Cons:
·         Looks bulkier on a newborn and could use cross over snaps to get the waist tighter

Overall I was really pleased with the Diaper Rite All In One newborn as with one insert it performed just as well as most other newborn diapers and with two inserts performed better.  My only con was that at 2 weeks it was a little bulky (even with one insert) and could have used cross over snaps for my little guy.  This diaper is said to fit from 5-15 pounds and while I would say that it will fit longer than most of the newborn diapers it also fit later and probably wouldn't have fit well at 5 pounds.  One important point to note is that at almost 3 months this is the only newborn diaper I am still using.  For the quality of the materials, absorbency with two inserts and price of the diaper you really can't go wrong with the Diaper Rite All In One newborn.

The pictures below are when Lachlan was 2 weeks old and about 6.5 pounds.  The fit on the legs was fine but the waist was a little loose and it was very bulky on my tiny newborn.

The next set of pictures I took were at 1 month old (5 weeks) and he was 9 pounds, 4 ounces.  The diaper is looking less bulky on him now and on the tightest waits snaps.

At 2 months old, my son was 11 pounds 2 ounces and 23 inches long.  He is still on the tightest wait snaps with plenty of room to grow.  The picture below also has both inserts in it and you can see that it's not too bulky at all.

Overall this was a really great newborn diaper and for the price it can't be beat!
